Not everything ends with an explosion. Some of the most tragic events of our lives fall softer than a feather landing on the ground; however, the small moments crush our hearts more than the large catastrophes.
Here is my list of events that caused my heart to shatter, in no particular order:
- Disappointing the person I love most in the world
- Rejection letters
- Losing a cherished piece of jewelry
- A terrible adaptation of my favorite novel
- Watching my crush slowly fall in love with someone else.
- Discovering someone ate my leftovers
- Another negative pregnancy test
- Having to give up a dream job for the good of the family
- Breaking a heel of a favorite pair of shoes
- When it rains, right before a date
- Canceled plans
- Kept plans
- Learning a series has a two-year production time before the next season
- Having to get gas in the morning and the temperature dropped overnight
- Waiting too long to admit it
What shatters your spirit may not shatter mine. Hearts are made of different materials and have unique designs. Some hold up more, and others are delicate. I can fall apart if someone looks at me wrong. Someone can yell at you on Monday morning, and you can work with them fifteen minutes later, with no issue, but your favorite pen going missing might ruin your day. You may not know my heart is made of crushed glass this morning because the store didn’t have the right coffee, while for you it might be losing a pool match last Friday night, even if it was a week ago it still presses down on your heart.
We don’t see the condition of other souls. Be as gentle as you can. We are trying our best to puzzle our hearts back together with glue and time as the world guides us towards the edge, waiting to shatter us once again.
